A glimpse into the future of PowerPoint..?

Thursday, July 14th, 2011 by Simon Morton

Discussion boards and presentation geeks the world over have been getting themselves into a tizzy with an alleged glimpse into the future of PowerPoint – TILES.

The furore all started when Eyeful’s penpal Steve Ballmer stood up and presented the exciting plans Microsoft have for Skype and Office 365.  A slow but sure murmur spread across the audience – “cool slides!”.

This is not normal at a Microsoft event.

Here’s what all the fuss is about:

Using the tile style animation seen on Windows Mobile devices, Steve was able to deliver information and comment in a clear and simple manner.

Jolly good.

Whilst we’re equally impressed with the new approach (here’s hoping it’s a standard feature in the next version of PowerPoint), we’re more excited about what this says about Microsoft’s approach to the software.

To us, it’s an example of Microsoft stepping up to the plate and taking some responsibility for PowerPoint.

It’s CSR in action – not in a “let’s make sure the software doesn’t crash or leave you open to security risks” way but in a “we’ll do everything we can to make the presentation experience more effective for the audience” way.

But let’s not get over excited!

The TILES approach is a simple way of improving the effectiveness of PowerPoint but the onus will always be on the presenter to make it really work.

That said, it’s a start…  Nice one, Steve.

PS – If you like the TILE animation but can’t wait for the next version of PowerPoint to arrive, drop us a line or give us a call.  We’ve been doing this for a while now!
